SVVSD School Board Election FAQ
Understanding the SVVSD School Board
What the board does and why it matters
Why should I care about school board elections?
School board decisions affect everyone, not only families with children in school. Strong schools shape the future of the whole community, benefiting every resident, today and in the future. Here is why they matter to you:
- Property values: Homes in areas with good schools keep higher value.
- Business and jobs: Companies want to grow where there are strong schools and a skilled workforce.
- Taxpayer money: The board manages hundreds of millions of tax dollars. Good oversight protects your investment.
- Future leaders: Schools prepare young people to join the workforce and community life.
- Community safety: Strong schools give students a sense of purpose and connection to their community.
What does the SVVSD Board of Education do?
The Board of Education has seven members. Each member is elected from a different part of the school district. The board makes the rules (policy), decides how to spend money (the budget), and hires the person in charge of all schools (the superintendent). Their decisions affect every student, teacher, and family in our communities.
What are the major responsibilities of a school board member?
A board member’s main job is to be a part of the district’s leadership team. They do not manage the day-to-day running of schools, but instead focus on the big picture. Their key duties include:
- Set the vision: Set the district’s main goals and policies.
- Approve the budget: Approve the district’s multi-million-dollar budget and ensure wise use of tax money.
- Hire and supervise the superintendent: Hire one employee, the superintendent, and make sure that person is meeting district goals.
- Represent the community: Listen to residents, work as a team, and advocate for students and schools.
What are the qualities of a strong school board member?
Serving on the school board is a community service role. The most effective board members share qualities that help them work well as leaders:
- Puts students first with a strong belief in the value of public schools.
- Team player who listens well and keeps an open mind.
- Big-picture thinker focused on long-term goals and district health
- Willing to learn and do the homework to make good decisions
- Fair and respectful of different viewpoints
- Sound judgment on complex issues
- Community advocate linking schools and the community
A strong school board depends on citizens willing to serve with vision, fairness, and a passion for students.
Is being a school board member a paid position?
No. SVVSD Board of Education members serve as volunteers and do not receive a salary. Colorado law allows boards to approve limited compensation if they choose, but SVVSD has not passed such a resolution. Board service here remains a voluntary public service role.

What is a “Director District” and why does it matter?
A Director District is a smaller area within the larger St. Vrain Valley School District. The district is split into seven Director Districts to make sure the board has members from all different communities (Dacono, Erie, Firestone, Frederick, Hygiene, Longmont, Lyons, Mead, and Niwot). Candidates must live in the district they want to represent, but every voter can vote for all open seats.
Who can run for the SVVSD school board?
To run, a person must live in the district area they want to represent and collect at least 50 signatures from registered voters on a petition. Petitions are due in late August before the November election.
How often are board members elected?
Board members serve four-year terms. About half the seats are up for election every two years to provide continuity and responsiveness.
Will there be any other school district measures on the ballot?
No. This year, the only item on the ballot from SVVSD is the election for Board of Education members. There are no district bond or tax measures.
